Thursday, June 14. 2007Are We Inherently Night Eaters? It is now known that the sympathetic nervous system virtually rejects eating! Here is the heart of the problem: most of us eat under stress during the day – and we're not supposed to! We are supposed to eat very little! That's the way the human body was designed. When you take a flesh machine designed to run on very little food and overwhelm it with food, bad food to boot, bad things are going to happen. Recent scientific literature on intermittent fasting proves my point. I published this theory seven years ago and since then, many in the scientific community embraced the concepts I set forth. However, scientists work according to predictions, and life is about surprise. The best and smartest scientists working in this field have already been predicting that we humans are not designed to eat much food during the daily working hours. We have inherited mechanisms that compensate us when we don't eat. When we do as we were originally intended, when we take advantage of our primordial hardwiring and limit food intake during the day, we realize a host of amazing benefits: increased energy, increased and improved food/fuel utilization, increased alertness, increased toxin removal capacity, improved stress-handling ability...The list of benefits goes on and on. On the other hand, when we overeat the wrong stuff during the day the list of disabilities, drawbacks, downsides and health consequences is equally as devastating: diabetes, heart attack, obesity, arterial clogging, constipation . . . on and on it goes. Humans are inherently night eaters. Our autonomic nervous system is well programmed for night feeding. At night the body is under the dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is triggered by eating large meals. This nightly nervous system is responsible for the regulation of critical nightly functions including relaxation, digestion and sleep. Any interruption in the parasympathetic nervous system may cause severe side effects including: insomnia, indigestion, chronic fatigue, agitation, inability to cope with stress, physical weakness, craving for sweets and eating disorders. The premise of the one main meal per day - at night - goes against all industrial interests. It means less money spent on breakfast, less on lunch, less on commercial products and less on doctor bills. An army of nutrition experts would tell you that this goes against any conventional dietary approach and doctors recommendations. Regardless, this is how humans are supposed to eat and if they don't, they will suffer the consequences like most people today do. Comments

"The premise of the one main meal per day – at night – goes against all industrial interests", you said it right. What i think right now? Good for us who follow this way of life...people take whatever they give 'em. I think that this diet is not for everybody, for the simple fact, to follow it you gotta have the warrior spirit, but as you know not everybody has it.
It is sad that the vast majority of Americans will never experience the benefits of undereating during the day and the "overeating" at night. I have always enjoyed that evening meal like I never had before. They are truly a feast. For those who read and follow Ori's advice will go to places few modern people will go. It is liberating.
Sounds like a pretty awesome idea. It must be pretty fun eating all of your daily meals at one sitting.
I have been eating like this for over a year now. To tell you the truth I did not even know about the Warrior Diet when I was water fasting during the day and only ate at night. I was doing this daily cycle for a couple of weeks until I found out about the Warrior Diet. I just wanted to fast because I knew of the benefits. Most people are against this way of eating because we have been taught to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Skipping meals results in starvation. We need food for energy. You need to eat three-to-six meals to keep your metabolism high. Nothing can be further from the truth. If every one only ate at night the breakfast companies would go broke, doctors wouldn't be getting enough money. In fact I do not even eating anything during the day. No fruit, no vegetables, no juices. Just water and vitamin C tablets (natural, no sugar, no preservatives, no sweeteners, no additives, no calories, just vitamin C). I am so much more alert. It definitely shows in my skin and eyes. Skin looks young, eyes sparkle. Fasting is the best!
How wierd is this! Ever since I was a child I always ate this way. I would only grab a glass of cholate milk in the morning, skip lunch and eat a big dinner. I was always in great shape, tons of energy and felt great. Then I got married and the wife starts saying you have to eat 3 meals a day etc... well the pounds went on and I felt like crap. Well I'm back to my old routine and I've dropped 20lbs and feel great. So much for the experts out there!
Ori,
That Trackback I did about you made the first page of Netscape today! You should see a surge in traffic to this post today. It is only a Noon PST and I've had over 1,300 hits to that article I did about you.
Cheers!

I am so happy to have found this blog. First let me say that this is the ONLY weight loss plan that has really worked for me. Sure, I have lost weight with other plans, but it all came back and I suffered through those diet days.
My interest is both weight loss and longevity (quality long life). Also, I have a very strong family history of type 2 diabetes and cardiac disease. My quality of life will be better if I can avoid both of those conditions.
This way of eating is surprisingly easy and fits into my lifestyle. I was worried about social events, but so far have been able to get by with just some iced tea and good conversation. I finally am enjoying cooking and baking bread, because I know I can have an unrestricted meal with the foods I love. The only thing I try to do is eat mostly organic, fresh and local food. It means frequent trips to the Farmer's Market and having less food in the freezer.
Since I am in the medical profession, I am interested in finding out more about the physiology of this plan. The more I understand the better it is for me. This seems so intuitive to me and above all, IT WORKS.
My last point...I do yoga daily, weight train with a personal trainer and try to walk as much as possible. I am 68 years old and want to really push the longevity thing. So any and all assistance is appreciated.

Thank you so much!
I've been eating this way for 5 months and i've never felt better. I eat a huge meal at about 1am and I sleep well, and detox all day, it's great.
I started a website to show people the advantages of eating like Primal Man called Caveman Power at http://www.cavemanpower.com/ and so far the response has been good.
It seems that we have a lot in common, and i'd like to thank you for campaigning for better health. Your website is an inspiration - it's nice to see somebody who "gets it".
this blog is great, i want to do this diet but im unsure what time to eat my meal. is around 11pm ok to eat my meal? im a boxer i weight 12 stone 10 pounds i need to get to a lean 11 stone 5 pounds, would the warrior diet help me to reach this goal? thanks
5 months on the Warrior Diet and I am sold. Body-fat is less, workouts are more intense and I have continued gaining muscle mass.
I also do a pure fast during the day, no calories, water and tea only.
The fitness 'experts' agree that the body is least likely to store fat after an intense workout. This is when metabolism is super-charged. So why not eat all the calories then?
And yes, you will avoid spending money on food that you didn't really want anyway. (Ever see office workers lined up for the same food-court crap every day? I have.)
